Affective Computing by Rosalind W. Picard,

Affective Computing by Rosalind W. Picard,
The latest scientific findings indicate that emotions play an essential role in decision making, perception, learning, and more -- that is, they influence the very mechanisms of rational thinking. According to Rosalind Picard, if we want computers to be genuinely intelligent and to interact naturally with us, we must give computers the ability to recognize, understand, even to have and express emotions. Part 1 of this book provides the intellectual framework for affective computing. It includes background on human emotions, requirements for emotionally intelligent computers, applications of affective computing, and moral and social questions raised by the technology. Part 2 discusses the design and construction of affective computers. Topics in Part 2 include signal-based representations of emotions, human affect recognition as a pattern recognition and learning problem, recent and ongoing efforts to build models of emotion for synthesizing emotions in computers, and the new application area of affective wearable computers.

Reliability of Computer Systems and Networks: Fault Tolerance, Analysis, and Design by Martin L. Shooman,
Reliability of Computer Systems and Networks: Fault Tolerance, Analysis, and Design by Martin L. Shooman,
A comprehensive introduction to reliability and availability modeling, analysis, and design at the system, hardware, and software levels Reliability of Computer Systems and Networks presents the fundamentals of reliability and availability analysis for various computer hardware, software, and networked systems. Reliability and availability as major objectives in system design are the focus. Various redundancy and fault-tolerant techniques, as well as error-correcting coding techniques are treated. The author proposes a high-level design approach based on apportioning the reliability and availability goals to subsystems and provides various techniques for achieving these subsystem goals. The next step is an efficient, exact optimization approach based on upper and lower bounds to minimize the number of feasible candidates. The most readily applied methods for analysis are utilized and design techniques are derived from basic principles. Analytical simplifications and approximations are developed to validate the results of computer models used for large-scale complex problems. Coverage includes: Coding and decoding schemes for error detection and correction including chip reliabilityComparison of the reliability and availability of parallel, standby, and majority voting architecturesFormulation, solution, and interpretation of Markov models for repairable systemsIntroduction and comparison of various RAID memory systemsThe architecture and fault-tolerant principles of TANDEM and STRATUS non-stop computer systemsPractical and tutorial examples and numerous practice problemsAppendices which cover the necessary background material on probability, reliability, andarchitecture Reliability of Computer Systems and Networks offers in-depth and up-to-date coverage of reliability and availability for students with a focus on important applications areas, computer systems, and networks.

Background (computer software) - The background, in the context of computer software processes, refers in general to processes that are run with a relatively low priority, require little or no input, and generate a minimum of output.

Daemon (computer software) - In Unix and other computer multitasking operating systems, a daemon is a computer program that runs in the background, rather than under the direct control of a user; they are usually instantiated as processes. Typically daemons have names that end with the letter "d"; for example, syslogd is the daemon which handles the system log.

Computer wallpaper - The terms wallpaper and desktop picture refer to an image used as a background on a computer screen, usually for the desktop of a graphical user interface. 'Wallpaper' is the term used in Microsoft Windows, while the Mac OS avoids mixing metaphors by calling it a 'desktop picture' (prior to Mac OS X, the term desktop pattern was used to refer to a small pattern that was repeated to fill the screen).

Computer Background - Computer Background Sourcebook of Parallel Computing Parallel Computing is a compelling vision of how computation can seamlessly scale from a single processor to virtually limitless computing power. Unfortunately, the scaling of application performance has not matched peak speed, computer background and the programming burden for these machines remains heavy. The applications must be programmed to exploit parallelism in the most efficient way possible. Today, the responsibility for achieving the vision of scalable parallelism remains in the hands of the application developer. ...
